Stripe fees as expenses
Record the fees Stripe charges your connected account as a monthly expense, with the tax treatment you choose, and recover the months you have already lived through.
Stripe takes its fees out of your balance before it pays you, so they never reach you as an invoice. They are still a deductible expense, and until now you had to download them from Stripe by hand to declare them. When you turn this on for a connected account, we record them for you.
What we record
Once a month, for each connected account, we create one expense with the fees Stripe charged during the previous month:
- Supplier. Stripe, as a contact with the
supplierrole, identified by its Irish VAT number. If it already exists in your contacts, we reuse it. - Date. The last day of the month the fees belong to.
- Amount. The processing fees, the fees Stripe charged on their own (such as monthly or currency conversion fees) and any fee that Stripe refunded, with its sign. The fees of apps that take a cut of your charges are not Stripe's and stay out.
- Status. Paid, because Stripe already took the money from your balance.
Each month is recorded once per account. If the same month is evaluated again, nothing is created twice.
When we record it
Every day, early in the morning, we check whether any month is ready. A month is ready four days after it ends, because Stripe can take up to 96 hours to settle its fees. So the expense for September appears around 5 October.
Tax treatment
You choose how the expense is treated before turning it on. There are two options:
reverse_charge_eu. An intra-community purchase: the expense is created at 21 % and you self-assess the VAT, so you declare it as output and input VAT in the Modelo 303, and it does not add to what you pay.exempt. An exempt service, with exemption cause E1 and no VAT.
Stripe invoices these fees from Ireland, and which treatment fits depends on your business, so we do not pick one for you and there is no default. We recommend confirming it with your tax advisor before you turn the expense on.
If Stripe charged tax on the fees of a month, we do not create the expense: that would be Irish VAT, which you cannot deduct in the Modelo 303, and we would rather not guess. The month is left for you to review.
Turn it on
You need the Purchases module in your plan, because the fees are recorded as
expenses. Without it, turning it on is rejected with 403
feature_not_available_in_plan.
Choose the tax treatment and the first month to record in the Stripe settings of the
app, or send them with

-d '{
"fee_expenses_enabled": true,
"fee_expenses_tax_treatment": "reverse_charge_eu",
"fee_expenses_since": "2026-01"
}'Turning it on without a treatment or a first month is rejected with 400
parameter_missing. Turning it off keeps the treatment, the month and the expenses
already created. The full list of answers is in
the release notes.
Recover the year
Choose a first month in the past, such as 2026-01, and the next daily check fills in
every month that has already closed, one expense each. You can go back up to 24
months. Months you recorded before are not repeated.
Months that wait
- If your company does not have the Purchases module when a month is evaluated, the month waits and is recorded as soon as you have it.
- If Stripe moved fees in a currency other than the euro, the month waits too, because the expense is recorded in euros.
- If the total of a month comes out negative, or Stripe charged tax on it, the month is left for you to review.
The PDF invoice from Stripe
The PDF invoice that Stripe issues for its fees cannot be downloaded through its API, so we cannot attach it for you. You can download it from the Documents section of your Stripe Dashboard and attach it to the expense by hand, from the app or with Attach a file to an expense.
